On Sunday our children were particularly wild at church. Afterwards a sweet lady in our ward stopped by to bring us a pen we had left behind on the bench. She spoke quickly for a few moments, rambling a little then left. Somewhere mid-ramble she said something that stuck. As she spoke of motherhood and the busy days filled with chaos, came the words, “Find your joy.”
I was completely caught off guard by the emotions that overwhelmed me after she left. Find your joy. It’s played over and over again in my mind. It has also brought on some intense introspection. Motherhood is a state of continual learning and self improvement. Each day I find little pieces of me coming together. My latest discovery has been the joy homemaking brings when I put my head down and get to work. The work of a mother & wife can be so fulfilling when approached with the right attitude. An attitude of joy and gratitude makes even the mundane feel a little less… mundane. The days when I am productive and go about my mom business like it’s my job(cause it kind of is) — I feel an incredible sense of accomplishment. When I celebrate tiny victories and see my work as important I feel fulfilled. This may be common knowledge but I feel like I have been enlightened. All this time I have focused all my energy on motherhood and I forgot to enjoy the homemaking part of the job description. So here’s to finding my joy in that mountain of laundry and the sink full of dishes.
